Choose the yard and the rules together

A fenced yard is only one part of a good fit. Check the number and type of pets permitted by recorded restrictions and applicable rules, fence requirements and any tenant restrictions. If you have several dogs, describe that exact situation before selecting a community.

A leashed forest outing

Lake Houston Wilderness Park’s rules require pets to remain leashed and include building and cabin restrictions. Check the current rules before visiting. Plan around the heat, bring water and choose a trail suitable for your dog; a woodland trail is not an off-leash dog park.

Patios: ask before you arrive

Do not assume every outdoor table permits dogs. Call the restaurant about its current patio policy, vaccination or leash requirements, busy periods and any restrictions. This guide does not label unconfirmed restaurants as dog-friendly.

A home-tour checklist for pet owners

Review fence condition and gaps, gate latches, shaded areas, the surface temperature of patios and the layout between the door and yard. For rentals, obtain the actual lease pet policy. For owners, verify both association rules and other applicable requirements.
